Thank you: Melissa's Story

Before I started the Virtual Assistant and CodePink, coding for women, programs with Niagara Women’s Enterprise Center, I was a stay-at-home mom for almost 10 years and was on ODSP. Making ends meet was difficult most months and I needed to make a change in my life that was positive and gave me more control over my finances.I found out about NWEC through the work program at ODSP/OW. When I started asking about educational programs in the region, I was told about the Niagara Women’s Enterprise Center. I was looking to upgrade my skills and find a job that could help support my family and most importantly, get off the ODSP systems. NWEC was a great place to get started and I found my passion there through the Virtual Assistant and CodePink programs. The most important change in my life since starting with NWEC has been that I have started my own Virtual Assistant business. I support small local businesses with content creation and educational consulting. Being my own boss has given me some great opportunities for my career as well as my home life. I can make my own hours which allows me to still be able to support my family at home. This includes being able to assist my children through online learning brought on by the pandemic.  This change is so important to me because being able to start up my own business and money and still provide and support my family is a wonderful feeling. I like feeling like I no longer have to rely on social programs for money and there is a sense of pride that comes with working for yourself. Starting my own business has done great things for my self-esteem and has allowed me to grow as a person.  I am not sure where I would be if it were not for the Niagara Women’s Enterprise Center. They have supported me and taught me so much through the programs they offer. I hope in the future to grow my business and I cannot wait to see where this leads me in my life
