What is Life Transition Coaching?

As I was thinking about my approach to coaching and;“about me”, I thought about my usual description of myself as a “life transition coach”. I often work with folks who are navigating life changes – career changes, empty nesters, planning for retirement, those who have lost a partner or other family member. However, I’m not sure, thinking about this, if being at some type of transitional stage in life, or needing to make a change of some kind, is a prerequisite for meeting with me for coaching. So, let me reframe my coaching practise as “life affirmation”. For sure, if you are looking to make a change and want to discuss pros and cons of various options, and how your choices align with your personal strengths and values, we can do that! I can support you in determining your goals for your desired life changes, and developing actions that you can take toward meeting those goals.  However, you might also want to meet with me to discuss where you are at right now, look at your life balance, and in the process, you may find that you are exactly where you need or want to be. Coaching can be helpful in that way too. A great deal of clarity can be gained by talking out loud about what really matters to you, what your personal strengths are, and how you are demonstrating those in your life. We can do a life balance exercise, complete your “life resume”, or look at the coping skills you find most helpful for meeting life’s challenges.
So, back to my “About Me”. I am a graduate of the Adler Graduate Professional School’s coaching program, having completed an extensive in-class and practicum curriculum. Adler Graduate Professional School is accredited by the International Coaching Federation. The training is founded on the principles that all people are complete and resourceful in themselves – it is the coach’s role to support them in drawing on their personal strengths and aligning their choices and actions with their life values. In other words, the client has all the answers. It is through a coaching conversation that the client receives the clarity they need to affirm those things in their lives that they are satisfied with and perhaps want more of, and to set goals surrounding any desired changes. I recently retired from a career in the public service, and spent the last several years managing and mentoring a team of highly professional individuals. For many years, I was a Peer Support Agent with our Agency’s Employee Assistance Program. In this role, I developed events and activities to bring coworkers together and support workplace wellness. I facilitated Mental Health First Aid training for our employees.  I have also volunteered with Distress Centre Niagara. It was through these various activities that I discovered my desire to connect and communicate with people and to celebrate the unique perspective each of us brings to the world. I’d love to meet with you, get to know what matters to you, and have a conversation about what truly “lights you up” in life.
