The Power of Recreation

What do you like to do for fun? What brings you a sense of peace? How do you feel after you’ve done something you enjoy? Simply put, the idea of ‘recreation’ is doing things you enjoy each day to improve your mind, body and soul. There are many leisure activities we love doing that can have a significant impact on our overall well-being: going for walks, gardening, painting, reading a book, journaling, creating music, exploring nature, spending time with loved ones, playing video games, watching your favourite movie, singing, visiting a new city, cooking/baking, sports, eating a delicious meal… it’s really up to you to find those activities that bring you happiness! Recreation can be a powerful tool when you use it in meaningful and purposeful ways.

Pay attention to how you feel when you’re doing those fun things. Does time fly by or are you bored? Do you look forward to the next time you can do it again or are you dreading it? You should be doing things you enjoy so that you will want to keep doing them. For me, I LOVE going to Zumba classes! Even though it’s a physical activity, the class always flies by for me because I’m truly enjoying myself. Listening to music, socializing with others, laughing, gaining confidence and moving my body is a great way for me to have fun while also improving my overall health and wellness.

There are so many benefits to different recreation activities, and the bonus is that because you’re having fun and enjoying yourself, you may not even realize the impact the activity is having on you. Let’s look at colouring and its benefits on your mind, body and soul:

- You’re practicing mindfulness; focusing on the colouring page and the rainbow of colours, not thinking about anything else other than your pencil crayon on the page and how you’re feeling in that moment

- You’re relaxing your body as you colour; using your fine motor skills to hold the pencil crayon and colour across the page, the constant motion of the moving pencil crayon helps your body feel calm

- You’re colouring an inspirational page; this quote means a lot to you and you feel a sense of accomplishment after you’ve completed the page, hanging it in your home to remind yourself that you made it with your own hands and you’re proud of yourself

Colouring is one of many activities with lots of benefits that can help you in therapeutic ways. Thinking about your own recreational activities, what are some benefits that resonate with you?    Sometimes it’s hard to participate in recreation and leisure activities when there are things that stop us, such as not having enough time, getting to/from places, cost of activities, not knowing what is available or not having someone to do those activities with us. You deserve to spend time doing things for yourself that you enjoy, even if it’s only for ten minutes each day. What are some free or low-cost options for you if you don’t want to spend too much money on recreation? Do you have hiking trails near you to go for a walk? Are you close to a park with a basketball court or soccer field? Does your local library have anything going on that you’re interested in? Ask your loved ones what they enjoy doing, and join them! The possibilities are endless and you may have to get creative with what will work for you.   Think about some of the things you like to do for fun. What is one thing you can do each day that will enrich your mind, body and soul?
