How  Niagara Women’s Enterprise Center Has Inspired and Impacted my Life.

When I was 53 years old, last year, my life was on a stand still. I was and still on Ontario Disability Support Program for my income. Being on a pension these days doesn’t get you very far. An agency that I am affiliated with had a retreat, and the retreat was all about going back to work and or school while receiving a pension. I had no idea that I could work while receiving a pension. I thought to myself and realized that I would have to update my resume and upgrade my computer skills.  The Niagara Women’s Enterprise Center was suggested to me. I signed up for a program there called the Computer Technology Career Launch Program. Brenda Martin (the manager at NWEC), and a lovely lady named Carrie Demer, were my instructors. These amazing women are very kind, caring, patient, and non-judgemental, of things that I shared with them about my past. This made me feel very accepted like I belonged, which was something I struggled within my lifetime. I was really scared at first but my instructors went out of their way to help me any way that they could, and they encouraged me enough, that I started to have confidence myself. This was something very new to me. I learned so many new and important things in my computer course. The ladies that were in my class last year were amazing too, and we are still very close and have a FaceBook chat group together. After I completed my course, NWEC helped me to figure out what it was, that I was going to do in my next journey. I decided to finish my grade 12 and get that diploma also. NWEC helped me to connect with the Catholic School Board. I ended up doing my co-op with NWEC. It felt amazing to work, alongside of such compassionate women. As I was completing my co-op, the manager Brenda Martin asked me if I would like to do some work for her, and I was thrilled beyond belief that someone had enough faith in me that they would offer me the amazing opportunity. Now I am a consultant/instructor and I just love my job and all of the people I work with. When I thought about being employed in the beginning all I wanted to do is help people and hopefully work in non-profit. I have never felt so good about myself, and I am proud of myself. I have NWEC to thank for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. I would also like to thank the the funders for their support that the Niagara Women’s Enterprise has received from them, because without them and other supporters NWEC wouldn’t be able to help women learn and grow like I did. Thank you, for letting me share.
